Macquarie Data Centres acquires Macquarie Park site for $240 million

As recently reported in The Australian, Rook Partners has successfully managed the search, identification, and facilitated negotiations to secure 2 Alma Road, Macquarie Park, a highly strategic acquisition for Macquarie Data Centres (MDC).

Macquarie Data Centres, a wholly owned subsidiary of Macquarie Technology Group Limited, has completed the acquisition of the Macquarie Park site. The site of 34,200 square metres was purchased for $240 million.

The Company intends to construct an engineering and technology campus co-located within a 200MW data centre campus in Macquarie Park. The Company’s designs are subject to obtaining planning and other approvals, and will be refined based on customer requirements, power approvals, construction staging, and funding. It is intended that the proposed facility will be designed to incorporate advanced air-cooling technology with limited water usage, with initial construction expected to be completed by late calendar year 2029.

The campus will build on Macquarie’s recently announced partnership with Macquarie University and will provide practical, hands-on opportunities for students and researchers to utilise latest data centre, cyber security, AI, and cloud technologies at the new Macquarie Park campus, creating pathways for students and academics to have direct experience in technology and engineering in collaboration with industry.

“This was a key acquisition for MDC negotiated off market. We are delighted to have completed this purchase on behalf of our valued client.” said Adam Sheumack, Director of Rook Partners.

Representing the Vendor, Macquarie Park Investments Pty Ltd, was James Barber, Simon Storry, and Matthew Lee at Jones Lang LaSalle.

Macquarie Data Centres CEO David Hirst said the project was their biggest development to date within the designated technology and innovation zone. Hirst said the company was looking forward to delivering critical national digital infrastructure.
